Today we are talking about Funkmaster Bootsy Collins.
Hey guys, [N] welcome to Tomans Guitars and Basses.
I'm at the LÜT Studio in Vienna today and we are
using one of their microphones for our bass amp.
Today we are talking about William Bootsy Collins.
Together with his brother Phelps Catfish Collins, who was playing the guitar,
he formed a funk band called The Pacemakers.
They got attention from funk godfather James Brown
and he invited them to play with him.
At that time Bootsy Collins was only 18 years old.
While
playing with James Brown's backing band, the original JBs, Bootsy recorded many future funk
classics like Talking Loud and Saying Nothing, Superbad and the song I'm Going to [Eb] Play Now,
Sex Machine, released in 1970.

[C] He
told in an interview that he was a very busy player at the beginning.
He actually played
guitar first because he wanted to be a guitar player just like his brother Catfish.
But he also
wanted to play in a band with him and then became the bass player.
James Brown taught him to play
less and to play on the one.

[C] So in the next song called Superbad, I want you to pay attention to that strong, funky [D] one.

[A] I got soul and I'm super bad.

I gotta move that tells me what to do.
Sometimes I feel so nice.
I wanna try [A] myself.
I got soul and I'm super bad.
That strong one just gives the groove so much drive.
You could even read the title of Bootsy
Collins' album that came out last year as an homage to the funky one.
I guess.
It's called
The Power of the One.
[Ab] Bootsy said that this album was the opportunity to put all these people
together that are not necessarily supposed to be together on a record.
He is featuring Victor
Wooten, Larry Graham, George Benson and Snoop Dogg.
And Alice Hall and Rod Castro are playing
on the song I want to show you now.
It is called Easy [Dm] Sliding.

[Eb] At the time he was playing for James Brown, he held his electric bass more [C] like an upright bass.
He said he always liked to see upright bass players and he wanted to have the same
vibe.
In 1972, he joined P-Funk [E] and he played bass on most of their albums
through the early 1980s.
So here is Give Up the Funk.

Over the years, Bootsy developed his own style of playing and songwriting.
He released several albums.
One of them was Stretching Out in Bootsy's Rubber Band,
released in 1976.
I'm going to play the song Another Point of View.

Oh, I'm deep.
Deeper than deep.
I'm coming out my silly sheet and I'll be cool as hell.
Coming out my golden habanero.
[A] Okay, guys, [Eb] now it is your turn.
What is your favorite Bootsy song or bass line?
